Today the Goodwill Fire Company held their annual Standard Operation Guidelines (S.O.G.) training for 2010. Every year the active firefighters in the company from the newest junior to the highest officer need to successfully complete an S.O.G. in order to perform a specific task and/or use a certain piece of equipment. The goal of an S.O.G. is to make sure the firefighter is familiar with a task or situation and how to successfully complete the task in the safest possible manner. In the case of a piece of equipment, it is used to make sure that the firefighter knows how to operate and maintain the euipment also in a safe manner. The S.O.G.'s are used for almost everything firefighters do from simple things like spotting a piece of apparatus while it is backing up to more involved and complex things such as interior firefighting operations. Age, experience, and training also play a role into what S.O.G.'s a firefighter can complete. Once an S.O.G. is succesully completed by a firefighter, it is then reviewed by the chiefs and a list is then printed with everyone's name on it stating what tasks and duties they are able to perform for the year. This is how the officers keep track of who can do what at a fire scene. The training was a long and hard one but in the end it proved to be a successful day. |
