Throughout the year many Myerstown Boro Residence ask questions regarding burning in the boro. I will give suggestions as to what you can and can't burn. 1. The burning of any trash, lumber, leaves, straw, grass, brush or other combustible materials is not permitted including for food preparation. Food preparation is permitted with use of fuels designated by the fire prevention officer. They are: charcoal, propane gas, domestic gas, and wood in appropriately designed appliances. Appropriate devices that are allowed by code are enclosed approved chiminea. These units can be purchased at many local stores, these are fully enclosed with a screen. 2. There is no OPEN PIT burning at all. Anyone Caught with an open pit will be issued a warning and possibly cited. Attached are many pictures of allowed units in the boro. Again normal gas grills are allowed but NO OPEN PITS. During the last few months we have received multiple calls in the boro regarding residences putting skids, branches, logs, and trash on a pile and had it up against a shed or garage. With no warning fire Apparatus will come out and we will put out the fire.. For questions regarding whether you are allowed to use certain units please contact the Goowill Fire Chief at firechief30@comcast.net or Myerstown Boro PD. During a Lebanon County Burn Ban, The use of a Chiminea is not allowed. The only authorized unit during a burn ban is a cooking gas grill using propane or natural gas. But caution should be taken even using these devices during a burn bad.

Its getting to the time of year where Exposure to excessive heat can cause loss of body fluids and a rise in body temperature. This may occur at any age but is most common in babies and elderly people. It can occur due to prolonged exposure to high atmospheric temperature or a brief exposure to very high atmospheric temperature (direct exposure to sun is not necessary) or due to heavy manual work in high temperature, high humidity. Pre-existing chronic diseases and alcoholism are some of the predisposing factors 1. Check your hydration -- The body cools by sweating, which is produced using the body's fluids. But at extremely high temperatures, natural cooling mechanisms start to fail and heat builds up in the body. Adequate hydration can stave off the risky reaction. If you're going to be physically active, opt for a sports drink which contains key electrolytes to keep your body in balance. 2. Check your head -- A headache is an important indicator of heat stroke, as are dizziness and disorientation. Unfortunately, once the latter symptoms develop, heat stroke can rapidly worsen. If you've been out in the sun and develop a headache -- even slightly -- start treatment procedures. Hats and umbrellas can both be useful tools to stave off sun-related health risks. 3. Check your friends -- Many of the symptoms of heat stroke are serious enough to impair judgment; assessing friends, and relying on them to do the same, can be invaluable. If companions have hot, dry skin, seem disoriented or confused, or appear sluggish, they might already be in the later stages of heat stroke. Call an ambulance by dialing 911 and, in the meantime, apply cool water to the skin and ice packs to the groin and armpits, and elevate the feet.

Please Spread the Word:: As many know the Elco School District has an EMT Program. Right now the district is advertising on the typical teacher's job site.To date Elco has received NO applications from teachers that are EMT's. Elco has done nothing as far as trying to reach happily employed teachers that are EMT's. These employed teachers with EMTcertifications are not looking for another "Regular" teaching job so they are not looking at the sites where ELCO has posted the jobs. The hope is that we as the ELCO community can spead the word through email, facebook, Twitter, websites to get the word out to the PA EMS Community. Applicant must be PA certified in Chemistry for grades 7-12, additionally applicant must be a certified PA Dept of Health EMT/EMS instructor. Active EMS experience is a plus. Send letter of interest, resume, PA standard application, 3 current professional references, copies of certifications and Act's 34. 114 and 151 clearances to Edward Felty care of Eastern Lebanon County High School, Myerstown PA 17067. Phone of 717-866-7447 Ext 2003. Applications must be received by May 21st 2012. Any EMS related questions can be directed to Dave Kirchner who is retiring from this position in June after many many years of service.. 717-926-2350. We as the ELCO Community count on this program to provide the much needed EMT's for our area. 100's of students have gone through this program over the years and many have gone into the medical field and many are still very active with the ambulance association. We as the Elco area can't afford to loose this program, pass the word around. Copy this and past it to your email, facebook, twitter, myspace. Any other form of communication so we can keep this program alive.
